Duke’s Gallery Hang Dong Review – Is It Worth the Price?
Duke’s has been one of Chiang Mai’s best-known Western restaurants for more than 20 years, earning a reputation for generous portions, American-style comfort food, imported steaks, burgers, pizzas and desserts. While many people know their original branches, this time I visited their newest restaurant in Hang Dong to see whether it lives up to the Duke’s name.
I also had another mission.
Since I’m writing reviews for Chiang Mai Discounts, I wanted to tick two boxes at once by reviewing both the restaurant and their pizza.
First Impressions
I arrived at around 6:30 pm, just as the restaurant was beginning to fill with customers.
The first thing that struck me was just how nice the restaurant is.
I don’t use the word posh very often, but it certainly fits here. Everything is spotless, modern and has the feel of a proper Western restaurant rather than somewhere that’s been adapted for tourists. The staff were friendly, greeted me immediately and escorted me to my table.
As it happened to be Buddha Day in Thailand, alcohol wasn’t being served, so I settled for the complimentary iced water while I looked through the menu.
The Menu
The menu is huge.
Personally, I’m not always a fan of massive menus because I end up spending more time trying to decide what to order than actually eating. Duke’s certainly gives you plenty of choice.
From burgers and sandwiches to ribs, pasta, pizzas, Mexican dishes, imported steaks and desserts, there’s something for almost everyone.
One thing is worth mentioning though…
This isn’t budget dining.
The prices are very much what I’d describe as Western prices. Imported steaks were reaching 1,800 Baht, so if you’re travelling on a backpacker’s budget this probably isn’t going to become your regular dinner spot.
Having said that, the restaurant continued filling up while I was there, so clearly plenty of people are happy to pay for the quality Duke’s has built its reputation on over the years.
The Pizza
I’d already decided I wanted to review their pizza, so I ordered the Small Meat Lovers Pizza topped with sausage, ham and pepperoni for 375 Baht.
While waiting, I photographed the menu for this review. Apologies if some of the pictures aren’t the best quality—I’m currently shopping for a proper camera because my phone simply isn’t doing these restaurants justice.
When the pizza arrived my first thought was…
“Wow…that’s the small?”
It was much larger than I expected.
In fact, looking at it made me wonder just how enormous the medium and large sizes must be. A large pizza would comfortably feed a family or a group of friends, making it much better value than it first appears.
As for the pizza itself…
Exactly as I remembered from eating Duke’s in the past.
It’s an American-style pizza with a generous amount of toppings, plenty of cheese, a nicely cooked base and served with Parmesan cheese, chilli flakes and Tabasco so you can customise it to your own taste.
I honestly couldn’t fault it.
Good quality ingredients, cooked well and very filling.
I managed to eat about half before admitting defeat and asking for the remainder to be boxed up to take home.
Dessert…Because It Would Be Rude Not To!
I’m not usually a dessert person, but there was a table sign advertising 50% off desserts, and for the sake of the review (that’s my excuse anyway!) I decided I should try one.
After confirming with the staff that the offer was still valid, I ordered the Deluxe Brownie with ice cream and whipped cream along with an Americano coffee.
The brownie was enormous.
It’s definitely big enough for two people to share and looked every bit as good as it tasted. Rich, chocolatey and beautifully presented.
Again, I couldn’t finish it and ended up leaving about half.
The One Disappointment
When the bill arrived, I paid without really checking it.
On the ride home I suddenly thought…
“I wonder if they actually applied the 50% dessert discount?”
Unfortunately, when I checked the receipt, they hadn’t.
Now, it wasn’t a huge amount of money, and I genuinely believe it was simply a staff oversight rather than anything deliberate. Still, after what had been an excellent experience from start to finish, it did take a little shine off the evening.
I’ve since emailed Duke’s to let them know and will update this review if they respond or resolve the issue.
They responded immediately and it was just a staff oversight as I thought they apologized and sent me a 500 baht gift voucher. Now that’s Customer Service.
The Bill
My total came to:
- Meat Lovers Pizza
- Deluxe Brownie
- Americano Coffee
Total: 655 Baht (around US$20)
Considering I took half a pizza home and the brownie could easily have been shared between two people, it’s not unreasonable for the quality, but it’s certainly not somewhere I’d eat every week.

Final Verdict
Would I go back?
Yes—but probably for a special occasion rather than a casual dinner.
Duke’s Gallery Hang Dong delivers exactly what you’d expect from one of Chiang Mai’s longest-established Western restaurants: excellent food, generous portions, professional service and a beautiful dining environment.
The only negative during my visit was the missed dessert discount, which they corrected in a fast and efficient manner.
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely.
Just go knowing that you’re paying for quality. If you’re expecting cheap Thai restaurant prices, you’ll be disappointed. If you’re after authentic American-style comfort food, excellent pizzas, imported steaks and generous portions in a classy setting, Duke’s remains one of Chiang Mai’s best choices.
Would I eat there every week?
Probably not—my wallet would soon start protesting!
Would I happily return for a birthday, family meal or special occasion?
Without hesitation.
